Neuropsychological assessment

Neuropsychology (<<add link) is an area of research dedicated to understanding brain and behavior relationships. Clinical evaluations are comprehensive and provide an objective assessment of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning. Dr. Kiely appreciates the diversity of individuals who request an evaluation. As such, the assessment experience is individualized, and the battery of assembled tests is tailored to address the targeted referral question.

A neuropsychological assessment can meet a number goals including:

  • Diagnosis of cognitive impairment and/or dementia
  • Establishing a cognitive profile of relative strengths and weakness
  • Characterizing the extent of cognitive and functional changes
  • Differential diagnosis (e.g. depression vs. normal aging vs. Alzheimer's disease)
  • A cognitive baseline, and subsequent tracking of progress over time
  • Establishing appropriate treatment recommendations in accord with patient needs

Changes in thinking, personality, and behavior can occur for many reasons. For assessment patients, Dr. Kiely sees adult patients (18 years +) who are experiencing a wide spectrum of conditions including:

  • Suspected neurological disease (e.g., Alzheimer's disease)
  • Cerebrovascular disease / stroke
  • Concussion / brain injury

  • Movement disorders (e.g., Parkinson's disease)
  • Endocrine disorders (e.g., Hashimoto’s disease)

Dr. Kiely has acquired extensive experience providing effective, compassionate treatment for individuals with anxiety disorders and depression. He employs the core principles of evidence-based psychotherapy, and only utilizes treatment approaches that have been empirically supported and are shown to be effective. These approaches include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) (<<add link), Exposure and Response Prevention (<<add link), Prolonged Exposure (<<add link), and Mindfulness-Based approaches.

CBT (<<add link), however, is a central treatment approach. CBT is a structured, time-limited treatment intervention aimed at solving current problems, and teaching individuals skills necessary to change maladaptive thinking and behavior. CBT is the most widely used, and the most heavily researched, evidence-based practice aimed to help ameliorate current symptoms and, by extension, help individuals better manage their lives, relationships, and improve overall satisfaction.

Dr. Kiely is available to see adult and adolescent patients who are experiencing a wide spectrum of mental health conditions including:

  • Depression
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
